The purpose of the system is to allow media houses and content providers to organise the news publishing workflow from the inception of news stories to publishing the news on several platforms such as print, web, mobile and radio.
Workflow for multiple publications - can manage the workflow for multiple publications (outlets). This makes it possible to gather and reuse content across different media and publications.

Planning and assignments - Editors can plan and assign news stories to journalists and photographers. With the planning feature, the editor can get a complete overview of what, where and when stories will be published.
Archive and search engine - All produced news stories are archived for later retrieval. It is also possible to import existing archives of images, videos, and audio clips. All items are indexed and easily available through the built-in search engine.
Metadata - News stories, photos, videos and audio clips can be indexed and tagged for easy retrieval through the built-in search engine and wiki. Meta data is embedded into archived files, making it available to applications such as Adobe Photoshop. The meta data capability is also used for automatically relating similar content and indexing in the search engine.
Automated publishing - Jobs can be setup to automatically publish news stories on the web, mobile or SMS via connectors. Connectors can be programmed for third party systems. A connector for automated publishing to the Joomla Content Management System is provided out-of-the-box.
Integration With Adobe InDesign for print publishing - For newspaper production integration with Adobe InDesign is provided with the ability to do round-trip editing of stories.
Newswire - Aggregate newswire stories in one user interface. Built-in support for RSS feeds, Daily Mail IMAP, Reuters World Service and NewsML-based newswires. Stories can be picked directly from a newswire and added to the publication workflow.
LDAP integration - Authentication and authorisation can be provided by LDAP-compatible directory services such as Microsoft Active Directory, OpenDAP and OpenDS.
Extensible Architecture – Yamama can be extended via a plug-in architecture that allows third party developers to build adapters for supporting custom newswire service and workflow action for executing custom code (such as uploading news items to websites) upon workflow transitions.
